Men and women who speak the same language, French, are referred to as the Francophonie. In five continents, there are reportedly over 321 million speakers of French.
The Francophonie is a separate organization that was founded in 1970 to foster political, educational, economic, and cultural cohesion among the 88 nations that make up the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), commonly known as the International Organization of La Francophonie.
The Secretary General of the Francophonie, who is presently Louise Mushikiwabo, is the institution's cornerstone, and the Charter of the Francophonie outlines its highest authority, the Summit of the Francophonie.
